Singapore table tennis team win championship. Is there any glory?
Three cheers for team Singapore table tennis who had just clinched the championships for the World Table Tennis Championships. But wait, what are we exactly cheering for? Are we cheering for the team representing Singapore or are we cheering for team China with the exception of their name being changed to team Singapore?
True enough that our team Singapore consists of China borned people. They might have represented team Singapore but do they represent our country as a whole? Chinese National representing Singapore. How ironical. Shouldn't they just represent their own countries? It's fair enough that Singapore has been putting in efforts in attracting foreign talents so that Singapore itself can grow even further. However, whats the point of attracting them when we ourselves are losing out in our own citizens iof Singapore. Take for example, Li JiaWei. She is a Singapore borned citizen. Yes, she made name for Singapore for the past years because of her amazing talent in table tennis. But look at where she is now. She is in Beijing, representing them for the China Table Tennis Super League. It may be a golden opportunity for her, but why is she representing other country instead of Singapore? Here we are, twelcoming foreign talents with open arms but on the downside of it, we are also letting Singapore based talents out of the country.
Just imagine, in 10 years time or maybe even sooner, what if Li Jiawei left Singapore and wanted to migrate to China. She will then be representing China. This will definitely made it out to the headlines in the newspapers. A bad one that is. Wouldn't that be a shame. Some might consider that is practically fine because the foreign talents can just take over her spot. But what if the foreign talents had a change of heart? They might miss their homeland and would want to move back. So, what does this show? It shows that Singapore was just a mere platform for them to get recognised and blossom their talents. A platform for them to showcase their talent and to make their name well-knowned. As compared to their home country, they can't do so because of their stiff competition. But now that their name are world renowned, most definitely their country would want to take them into their team. And what are we left of? Nothing. Yes, nothing.
Therefore, i'm on the fence regarding this topic. I can be supportive and yet, i can also condemn them. Each and everyone of us have our own opinions, but whatever it is, congratulations to team Singapore.
